Fortnite is an online video gaming platform released in 2017. It has seven distinct game mode versions: Fortnite Battle Royale, Lego Fortnite, Fortnite: Save the World, Fortnite Creative, Fortnite Festival, and Fortnite Ballistic. They share the same general gameplay and game engine. In Dec 2024, the platform released Ballistic, a new first-person Fortnite experience. Fortnite Ballistic is a round-based 5v5 competitive game mode where strategy, tactical teamwork, and individual prowess are essential for victory. [1]
Fortnite has a cult-like following among gamers. The platform refreshes its games with new characters, themes, and missions to boost customer acquisition and retention. This strategy also increases usage frequency and loyalty. In Jul 2025, Fortnite updated its LEGO Fortnite game mode. The latest updates include a new Supernova Academy mission map in LEGO Fortnite Expeditions, Bestie Fest, and animal care at The Trot Lot and Cozy Paws Café. [2]
Fortnite disrupted the online video gaming sector with its iconic games. The platform has been nominated and won several awards. Its first recognition came in 2017, “Best Co-op Game” by PC Gamer and “Best Spectator Game” by IGN. Fortnite won the Ultimate Game of the Year, Best Ongoing Game, Best Multiplayer Game, Fan Favorite Game, and Brand Engagement awards between 2018 and 2023. Although Fortnite was nominated twice at the 2024 Game Awards, it didn’t win any category. It was outperformed by Baldur’s Gate 3 for Best Community Support and Helldivers 2 for Best Ongoing Game. Who is Fortnite’s Owner?
Fortnite is owned and developed by Epic Games Inc., which is a American video game and software developer based in Cary, North Carolina. Tim Sweeney founded Epic Games as Potomac Computer Systems in 1991 in his parents’ house in Potomac, Maryland. In 1992, Potomac Computer Systems rebranded as Epic MegaGames, Inc. after releasing its first commercial video game: ZZT. Mark Rein joined the company in 1992 as vice president. The studio moved its headquarters to Cary in 1999 and later changed its name to Epic Games, Inc.
Epic Games developed Unreal Engine to power its internally developed video games. This commercial game engine powers Fortnite, Unreal, Gears of War, and the Infinity Blade series. Several industries utilize the technology, including films, television, architecture, automotive, manufacturing, and simulation. It also powers the Epic Games Store and Epic Online Services. In Jun 2025, Epic Games unveiled its new offerings at the Unreal Fest 2025. The parent opened self-publishing for developers and publishers on iOS and Android, embedded the MetaHuman Creator in Unreal Engine 5.6, and showcased its CD Projekt Red. [4]
Epic Games offers Fortnite through the Google Play Store and Apple App Store. It introduced an in-app payment mechanism in the iOS App Store to expand its revenue streams. This feature violated App Store rules. In 2020, Apple removed Fortnite from its iOS App Store. Fortnite returned to the iOS App Store in the US in May 2025. “I had actually hoped that we would get an injunction against Apple blocking Fortnite and that we’d only be off for a few weeks,” said Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney, “But the court process dragged out, and we were off for five years.” [5]
Epic Games is one of the world’s most innovative game developers. The company leverages cutting-edge technologies and strategic crossovers to retain Fortnite’s freshness and relevance. In Jun 2025, Epic Games opened the Unreal Editor for Fortnite (UEFN) to creators. Fortnite creators can now develop AI-powered NPCs similar to the AI Darth Vader. They can create characters with unique personalities and the AI NPC’s characteristics using the UEFN. Users can talk to characters using their voices and hear an AI-generated version of James Earl Jones’s Vader voice. [6]

Fortnite’s Ownership History
Fortnite was developed by Epic Games which was released in 2017. However, the platform traces its origins to the founding of Potomac Computer Systems in 1991. Tim Sweeney was studying mechanical engineering at the University of Maryland and visited his parents in Potomac, Maryland, to use his computer for work and leisure. He founded Potomac Computer Systems as a computer consulting business and pivoted to gaming. In Jan 1991, Sweeney released his ZZT game with a custom ZZT-oop programming language for easy modifiability. This strategy paid off. Sweeney’s father, Paul Sweeney, fulfilled the orders by mail and sold thousands of copies by 2009. The studio shipped the final ZZT copy in Nov 2013 and developed Fortnite four years later.
Fortnite’s owner transformed from a computer consulting business to a video game company. The move pitted Fortnite against established studios, including Apogee Software and id Software. Sweeney selected Mark Rein, a former id Software employee, as his business partner to handle sales, marketing, and publishing deals. In 2012, Tencent acquired a whopping 40% stake in Epic Games. The deal helped Epic adopt the games as a service model. Sweeney remained the controlling shareholder in the company. Epic Games launched Fortnite Battle Royale in 2017 and hosted the first Fortnite world championship in 2019. [7]
Fortnite expanded its customer base under Epic Games and Tencent by refreshing its games and seasons. For example, Fortnite Season 2 lasted 70 days. Gamers enjoyed Fortnite Season 3 for 58 days, Season 4 for 73 days, Season 5 for 78 days, Season 6 for 71 days, Season 7 for 84 days, Season 8 for 70 days, Season 9 for 84 days, and Season X for 73 days. The longest-running Fortnite experience was Chapter 2 Season One. In Nov 2024, gamers played Fortnite Remix for only 29 Days. [8]
Epic’s strategic acquisitions and investors helped Fortnite dominate the gaming space. The parent company received $1.25 billion in investment from seven firms in 2018, increasing its valuation to $15 billion. KKR, ICONIQ Capital, Smash Ventures, aXiomatic, Vulcan Capital, Kleiner Perkins, and Lightspeed Venture Partners joined Tencent, Disney, and Endeavor as minority shareholders. The company used the funds to expand support for Fortnite and the Epic Games Store. It also acquired over 15 firms, enhancing the Fortnite platform. For example, Harmonix developed and launched the Fortnite Festival mode in Dec 2023. Four players can partner to play the virtual lead, drums, vocals, and bass parts to each song with falling notes in classic style. Fortnite purchased Harmonix in 2021. [9]
Epic Games partnered with leading gaming companies to expand Fortnite. Sony is a video game console producer and the world’s largest video game publisher. The Japanese company develops the world-famous PlayStation. In Apr 2022, Sony and Kirkbi invested $2 billion in Epic Games for a 4.9% stake in the company. This deal valued the video game publisher at $31.5 billion. Kirkbi is a family-owned investment company behind The Lego Group. [10]

Fortnite’s Shareholder Structure
Fortnite’s owner, Epic Games Inc., is a private company. Although Epic Games develops and publishes Fortnite, it doesn’t own 100% of the brand. Epic’s ownership is spread across various investment partners, including Tencent, Disney, Endeavor, KKR, ICONIQ, Smash, aXiomatic, Vulcan, Kleiner Perkins, and Lightspeed. Tencent has been Epic’s top investor since 2012. The Chinese multinational conglomerate supported Fortnite’s growth and fueled its success in China. [11]
Fortnite’s owner hasn’t announced plans to go public. The blockbuster video game is one of the world’s most popular games, with over 650 million active accounts. As of Dec 2024, Tim Sweeney was Epic Games’ majority shareholder. Tencent is Epic Games’ second-largest shareholder, followed by Disney at 9%, Sony at 4.9%, and Kirkbi at 3%. [12]
External investors can’t invest directly in Fortnite until Epic Games goes public. They can support Fortnite by investing in Tencent, Sony, and Disney. These three publicly traded firms own shares in the company. Tencent holds 40% of Epic Games’ stock. As of Aug 2024, Tencent had 9.07 billion common stock shares held by mutual funds & ETFs, institutional and retail investors, and public companies. Prosus N.V. was Tencent’s largest shareholder in Jul 2025, with 23.22% of the company. This figure translates to 2.1 billion shares. The Vanguard Group is Tencent’s second-largest institutional shareholder with 2.88%, followed by BlackRock, Inc. at 2.64%, Norges Bank at 1.32%, Ma Huateng Global at 1.05%, and FMR LLC at 1.00%. Other top players are Capital Research, E Fund, JP Morgan, and Hang Seng Investment Management. [13]
Fortnite’s newest shareholder is Disney. The American entertainment, sports, and experiences powerhouse invested $1.5 billion to acquire stake in Epic Games in 2024. The two companies partnered to expand the “Disney universe” for consumers to interact with characters and stories from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, and Avatar. “This marks Disney’s biggest entry ever into the world of games and offers significant opportunities for growth and expansion,” said Disney CEO Bob Iger. Disney trades on the NYSE as DIS. In Jun 2025, Vanguard Stock Market Index Fund was Disney’s largest institutional shareholder, with 3.21% of the company. This figure translates to 57.8 million shares. The Vanguard 500 Index Fund is Disney’s second-largest shareholder with 2.84%, followed by Fidelity Concord Street Trust at 1.27%, SPDR S&P 500 ETF at 1.21%, and iShares Trust at 1.18%. [14]
The public can invest in Fortnite by acquiring Sony’s shares. Sony trades on the NYSE. In Apr 2021, Epic Games completed a $1 billion funding round, including an additional $200 million from Sony Group Corp. This deal increased Epic’s valuation to $28.7 billion from $17.3 billion. “We are grateful to our new and existing investors who support our vision for Epic and the Metaverse,” said Epic’s CEO Tim Sweeney. [15]
Although Fortnite is one of the world’s most popular games, its parent company isn’t profitable. According to Apple’s documents, Epic Games lost around $100 million and $200 million per annum from 2019 to 2021. In Feb 2024, the Disney-Epic $1.5 billion investment deal valued Epic Games at $22.5 billion. Epic’s valuation dropped from $31.5 billion in Apr 2022, when it raised funding from Sony Group Corp.
