Top 15 Figma Competitors and Alternatives

Figma is a collaborative web-based design and prototyping platform headquartered in San Francisco, California. The company was founded by Evan Wallace and Dylan Field, who began working on the Figma application in 2012 as students at Brown University.

In Dec 2015, the founders started offering a free invite-only Figma preview program. They released the app in Sep 2016. In Oct 2019, the company launched the Figma Community for designers to publish their work. Figma released its FigJam digital whiteboarding capability in Apr 2021.

FigJam allows users to collaborate with emojis, sticky notes, and drawing tools. In Nov 2023, Figma integrated AI into FigJam to expand its capabilities. Users can now leverage generative AI to visualize ideas and plans, suggest best practices, and automate tedious tasks. As of Dec 2023, Figma employed around 1300 people. [1]

Figma is a leading cloud-based designer platform for interface design, with offline features for macOS and Windows desktop apps. Users can collaborate in real-time and leverage vector graphics editor and prototyping tools to improve user interface (UI) and user experience (UX) design.

With the new AI-powered FigJam, developers can transition from a blank page to a personalized FigJam in seconds and generate templates for weekly team syncs, brainstorms, and reviews. In Sep 2022, Adobe agreed to acquire Figma for about $20 billion. Antitrust agencies criticized the deal because Figma competes with Adobe XD.

In Dec 2023, Adobe and Figma terminated their $20 billion deal after hitting regulatory roadblocks. Figma faces stiff competition from Adobe, Miro, Sketch, UXPin, Lucid, Mockplus, Moqups, and InVision. [2]

Here is an in-depth analysis of Figma’s top 15 competitors and alternatives:

1. Adobe

Year founded: 1982

Adobe is a multinational computer software company. It offers industry-leading design tools, including Adobe XD, Creative Cloud Express, Photoshop, InDesign, and Lightroom. In Jan 2023, Adobe had over 29,200 employees.

Adobe XD was one of Figma’s top competitors. The company discontinued support for XD and dismantled most of its XD team after agreeing to acquire Figma for $20 billion in 2022. According to TechCrunch, Adobe was committed to replacing XD with Figma because the product never made $15-$17 million annually. In Dec 2023, Adobe’s plan to acquire Figma failed. However, the company has enough resources to purchase another collaboration startup, revamp XD, or build a new platform from scratch. With or without XD, Adobe is still the top competitor for Figma. [3]
