Who Owns Happy Madison Productions?

Happy Madison Productions is a California-based American television and film production company ocated in Culver City. The company was founded in 1999 by Adam Sandler, an award-winning American comedy actor.

It takes its name from Happy Gilmore and Billy Madison films. In May 2023, UFC boss Dana White announced that UFC would collaborate with Adam Sandler and Happy Madison to create an MMA-themed comedy. MMA documentaries like “McGregor Forever” receive high viewership and ratings on Netflix. [1]

Happy Madison is known for its comedy films. The production company’s foray into horror derailed with the first film. Happy Madison created the “Scary Madison” division in 2009 for horror genre projects.

The division’s first movie, The Shortcut, was written by dev officer Dan Hannon and Scott Sandler. The draft was altered innumerable times during production, making the film a commercial failure. Happy Madison disbanded its horror genre division and focused on comedy. [2]

Happy Madison offers original content across the comedy genre niche, from films to musicals and animations. In Feb 2024, the production company announced a new Netflix comedy special directed by Josh Safdie. It is Happy Madison’s second Netflix special, following the 2018 “100% Fresh.”

The project continues the company’s collaboration with the Safdie brothers, who directed Adam Sandler in the 2019 “Uncut Gems” and the 2020 short film “Goldman v. Silverman.” [3]

Netflix is Happy Madison’s leading partner. The production company has delivered several projects for Netflix since 2015, including Father of the Year, The Wrong Missy, The Out-laws, Leo, Hustle, Murder Mystery, Hubie Halloween, Sandy Wexler, The Do-Over, and the Ridiculous 6.

In Jan 2024, Netflix’s co-CEO revealed that the streaming service and Happy Madison were discussing Leo 2. The 2023 Leo debuted as the highest-rated original Netflix animated feature. But who owns Happy Madison Productions? [4]

Who is Happy Madison’s Owner?

Happy Madison Productions is an independent company owned by Adam Sandler. Its parent company is Happy Madison, Inc., based in Manchester, New Hampshire, and led by Adam and his brother Scott as VP and Secretary.

In 1995, Sandler was fired from Saturday Night Live (SNL). He starred in Billy Madison (1995) and Happy Gilmore (1996), which put him on the map. In 1999, Sandler founded Happy Madison Productions.

Sandler met his future wife, Jackie, in 1999 and married her in Jun 2003. Jackie has been featured in several Happy Madison films, including Little Nicky, Eight Crazy Nights, 50 First Dates, and The Benchwarmers.

In May 2006, the couple had their firstborn, Sadie Madison. Their second child, Sunny Madeline, was born in Nov 2008. Both Sadie and Sunny have appeared in several Happy Madison films. [5]

Happy Madison is a highly profitable business. Most of the company’s 2023 income came from lucrative deals with streaming giant Netflix, which has worked with Adam Sandler since 2014.

In 2023, Sandler was the highest-paid Hollywood actor, with $73 million from three movies and 44 stand-up comedy shows. Netflix subscribers spent 500 million hours watching Sandler’s movie catalog in H1 2023. [6]

Adam Sandler’s late father, Stanley Sandler, influenced his projects and ambitions as an actor and producer. Adam Sandler added an image of a man with a golf club, graying beard, and mustache on Happy Madison’s logo.

The face belonged to his late father, who died of lung cancer in 2003. In “Hustle,” Sandler named the main character “Stanley Sugerman” to honor his father. He played the role and grew his beard to resemble his dad. Sandler also used his late father’s voice in the animated film Eight Crazy Nights as the character “Davey’s Dad.” [7]

Happy Madison Ownership History

Adam Sandler founded Happy Madison in 1999 with Jack Giarraputo, an American film producer. Giarraputo directed Billy Madison and Happy Gilmore. Both films were named after Sandler’s main characters and put Sandler on the map.

Hollywood producer Doug Robinson is a notable player in Happy Madison’s founding. He ran the company’s television operations for over a decade.

Happy Madison’s first movie was “Duece Bigalow, Male Gigolo.” The film only featured Sandler’s voice, with Ron Schneider playing the lead role.

In 2007, Happy Madison expanded its offering to include television shows. The company produced “Rules of Engagement” and “The Goldbergs,” a sitcom about a family living in the 80s. The Goldbergs received high ratings. [8]

As Happy Madison’s founder and owner, Sandler stars in most of the company’s movies. His first leading role was in Little Nicky (2000), followed by Mr. Deeds, Eight Crazy Nights, The Longest Yard, 50 First Dates, and Anger Management,

In 2014, Happy Madison signed a deal with Netflix, which drove the company’s high profitability. Sandler starred in at least one film yearly between 2010 and 2020. By 2020, the production company had made around $3.9 billion. Netflix signed a new deal with Sandler in 2020 worth around $275 million. [9]

One of the factors behind Happy Madison’s success is Sandler’s product placement strategy. The company’s movies blend promotions with gags, such as McDonald’s, which was featured in Big Daddy, Popeye’s in Little Nicky, Wendy’s in Mr. Deeds, and KFC in Grown Ups.

Viewers can spot product names and logos in several Happy Madison films. In the new Netflix movie Spaceman, Sandler expanded his strategy to promote more products. His character, Czech astronaut Jakub, lists all the items he needs to accomplish his solo mission to outer space. He highlights products from the sponsors. [10]
